Heparin

Heparin is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) that prevents the formation of blood clots.
1. Heparin is used to treat and prevent blood clots in the veins, arteries, or lung.
2.  Heparin is also used before surgery to reduce the risk of blood clots.
3. Heparin is a drug thinner commonly used in dialysis.
4. Heparin may also be used for purposes other than those listed above.

Initially 19 deaths were attributed to Heparin, recently that number has risen to at least 62. (See The NY Times Article Here). Heparin is made from the mucous membranes in pig intestines and it is commonly used in dialysis and in many types of surgery.

In February 2008, Baxter Healthcare Corporation recalled many of its Heparin products. After launching a far-ranging investigation, FDA scientists identified a previously unknown contaminant in the Heparin.

Popular news reports speculate that supplies of Heparin that were acquired and distributed by Baxter Healthcare Corporation to patients in the United States were tainted by suppliers in China.

The suspected ingredient originated at a Changzhou, China, plant owned by Scientific Protein Laboratories, a Baxter supplier based in Waunakee, Wis. The FDA is investigating the Chinese supply chain that leads to the Changzhou plant where tainted Heparin may have originated.
