Vioxx®
“$250 million in settlements and verdicts”
When Vioxx® was released in 1999, the anti-inflammatory, non-steroidal arthritis medication was hailed as a miracle. Though Vioxx® was effective at managing acute pain and was even able to prevent the recurrence of colon polyps, a significant number of patients developed cardiovascular problems. Those injured by use of the drug should contact the Florida Vioxx® attorneys at the Law Offices of Robert Rubenstein, P.A.
Vioxx® is part of the family of drugs known as COX-2 inhibitors, which includes Bextra® and Celebrex®. These drugs were initially hailed as "super aspirins," believed to be highly effective at relieving pain and inflammation without the stomach irritation associated with aspirin.
A clinical trial that started in the year 2000 found that twice as many Vioxx® patients suffered from heart attacks and strokes than those in the placebo group. On September 30, 2004, Vioxx® manufacturer Merck & Co. removed the drug from pharmacies. With an estimated 80 million worldwide users, the Vioxx® withdrawal is considered one of the largest in history.
In the five years that Vioxx® was on the market, the Food and Drug Administration estimated that the drug caused somewhere between 88,000 to 139,000 heart attacks. Furthermore, the FDA estimated that 30 to 40 percent of those heart attacks were fatal.
Our Florida Vioxx® attorneys advise you to contact our firm if you have suffered from cardiovascular problems while taking Vioxx®. We also urge users of Bextra® and other COX-2 inhibitors to contact our firm if they were harmed by the affects of these medications.
